Camera

I currently have lust in my heart for the following material possessions. I am not ashamed.

1. Nikon D200 10.2MP Digital SLR Camera
Nikon D200 10.2MP Digital SLR Camera (Body Only)

Sweet baby Jesus, please bring me the D200, it is everything I could want in a camera, and I would never desire anything ever again. (Lens and accessory lust excluded. And “ever again”, honestly, is probably about 5 years.)

[edit] Or, “ever again” could be… now, seeing as how they just announced the D300, to be released in November, at about the same price point. Of course, that also means that if I stick with the D200, I should be able to get a deal on it come December…[/edit]

2. Nikon 50mm f/1.4D AF Nikkor Lens
Nikon 50mm f/1.4D AF Nikkor Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras

Available light would be my bitch.

Or…

2a. Nikon 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 G ED-IF AF-S VR DX Zoom-Nikkor Lens
Nikon 18-200mm VR

Everything would be my bitch. But I would have to eat beans for a month.

3. Sandisk ULTRA II High Performance 8.0 GB CF Card
Sandisk ULTRA II High Performance 8.0 GB CF Card (SDCFH-8192-901, Retail Package)

8 GB will hold about 500 RAW files with 25 in the buffer. Hot.

4. Nikon SB-800 AF Speedlight
Nikon SB-800 AF Speedlight for Nikon D50, D70s, D80, and D200 Digital SLR Cameras

Though I’ll hardly need this with the lens above, it’ll come in handy later.

5. Tamrac 5606 System 6 Camera Bag
Tamrac 5606 System 6 Camera Bag (Black)

It’s not pretty, but I’ll need something to carry all this in, and it has room to grow.

6. 2007 Mini Cooper S

It is pretty, and I’ll need something to carry me and the ugly bag full of camera stuff around.

  1. I’ve got the D200. I love the D200, possibly to an inappropriate extent. However, if I were purchasing again, I would seriously evaluate buying the D80 and spending my savings on more glass. And if the D300 were in the picture, I would definitely purchase either the D300 or the D80, not the D200. Love the 50 1.4, love the 18-200. I have the SB-800, but would probably buy the SB-600 instead, because most of the advantage seems to be in complicated multi-flash situations that I’m unlikely to set up.

Regarding the bag, I’ve found that I like my backpack-style Crumpler, or my Lowepro Toploader 70AW (depending on what I’m doing) better than my shoulder bag. But, you can never have too many bags. Ann is ok with my bag problem. Really. I swear.

There’s a bad joke in there somewhere about your wife being ok with your bag problem, but I don’t feel up to it this morning.

Also, I like the way you think - the D300 it is. To my Lovely Wife, my Loving Parents, my Kind and Generous Brothers, and all my Witty and Terribly Attractive Friends - and anyone else who may feel inclined to get me a Christmas present this year - may I suggest cash? You will be relieved of the pressure to find the perfect gift, and I will be partly relieved of the $1800 price tag. Everyone is happy.
